Sunday, September 11th, was like any other Sunday at Fort Ross State Historic Park with visitors enjoying the park and I was expecting a visit from a friend, Frank Binney, of National Association of Interpretation, and his Russian neighbor, Walt Pack.  Frank had called several weeks back and asked if I would give a ‘special’ tour to a dear Russian immigrant friend and neighbor.  I graciously said yes, of course, as fellow park friends will call on each other quite often. It is a beautiful sunny afternoon when Frank, Walt, Jeanette, and Kathy showed up. I gave them the ‘walking tour’, showed the otters skins, and discussed the presence of the Russian American Company. We all had a fabulous time. Walt was truly fascinated with Fort Ross. I was fascinated by Walt and his stories of his life and parents. I also loved hearing about his new goat farm. Such an energetic and well spoken person. We had a grand time.

After the visit, Frank contacted me and explained Walt’s desire to make a donation to the Interpretive Program at Fort Ross. Walt’s generous donation of $10,000 will enhance our volunteer and educational programs. Also included in the gift was a Russian wolf pelt hat given to him from his host in Moscow and three wonderful pictures of his recent visit to Fort Ross.

Park interpreter Sarah and I recently made a trip to visit with Walt, Frank, Kathy, and Jeanette. We enjoyed a cup of tea, a tour of Walt’s home, a visit with his goats, and a nice lunch at Nicassio’s. We presented Walt with two tea cups and a tea pot from Russia and a picture of the two groups who will benefit; the school programs and the volunteer programs. There were tears of joy from all of us as we shared our appreciation. Sarah and I can think of a million and one things to do with this generous donation. Our first project will be to build a Russian style stove with correct size bricks within the fort compound. The current rock fireplace is a dire need of being replaced. The new addition will add to the historical authenticity of the outdoor kitchen and cooking. A brick will be placed with Walt’s name on it – also known as Vladimir Kulakoff to honor his thoughtful gift. Thank you Vladimir – you are so kind and generous. With love, from Fort Ross.  Monday, May 15, 2006, Fort Ross staff made a visit to the McNear Brick yard. Sarah Gould, Robin Joy, with Walt Pack, Frank Binney, and Jeannette Pontacq enjoyed the tour with Steve Albang. We looked at the art of making bricks, the various material and sizes, and the many different end results. Mr. McNear was on site and also gave us a personal tour of the old kilns. We had a fabulous time. Steve was a fantastic tour guide. To learn more about McNear's visit their website
