The Fort Ross 2012 Bicentennial Committee is pleased to introduce the Fort Ross Bicentennial Commemoration. Fort Ross 2012 (FR2012) is a joint project of The California State Parks, Fort Ross State Historic Park, and the Fort Ross Interpretive Association, who together promote the historical and educational benefits of Fort Ross and the surrounding areas. We invite you to join the year-long celebration of Colony Ross.
The
mission of Fort Ross 2012 is to
commemorate the 200
years
of natural, cultural and human history of Fort Ross (known today as
Fort Ross
State Historic Park),
increase public interest and preserve the rich and vital
legacy for future generations through a series of special events
featuring the diverse influences of many people, including Kashaya
and Coast
Miwok Indians, Russians,
Native Alaskans,
Spanish,
Mexican
and Americans.

In 1812, on a stretch of the Pacific Ocean eighty miles north of San Francisco, Russian explorers established Colony Ross,юя Russia’s deepest vanguard into North America. Colony Ross was settled to establish trade relations with the Spanish in California, produce food to support the Russian settlements in Alaska, as well as to expand the valuable sea otter trade.
Although the Russian American Company stayed for just three decades their contributions to early California society were vast – they built California’s first ships and windmills, introduced glass-paneled windows, created the first brickyard, catalogued the local flora and fauna, completed detailed maps and were, by today’s standards, among California’s earliest entrepreneurs. Fort Ross is an excellent example of the best of California and what it has to offer the world: a rich history, diverse cultural legacy, beautiful nature and dedicated people.
Fort Ross State Historic Park, established in 1906 as one of California’s first State Historic Parks, is planning to celebrate the 2012 bicentennial in the spirit of this shared past. The FR2012 Bicentennial Committee would like to invite you to join us in a bicentennial commemoration project.
We
envision that the celebration in 2012 will take place not only on the
grounds of Fort Ross, but throughout the Bay Area, Sacramento, and
elsewhere in the
United States and abroad. We believe the rich and diverse history
associated with 200 years of existence of Fort Ross provides an
excellent opportunity to work cooperatively in the development of
exhibits, shows, symposia, and concerts which will provide insights
into the time when Fort Ross was put on the map and also reflect on
the establishment of California as a state.
Our Committee members are Emilio Valencia, Marion MacDonald, Daniel Murley, Martha Ann Francisca McGettigan, Zoya Gradov, Richard Andriano Moore, Amy Lemmer, Hank Birnbaum, Peter Benitz, Jeremy Stinson, Sarah Sweedler, and Tom Wright. Organizations we are working with are Sonoma County Museum, Presidio Trust in San Francisco, Congress of Russians in America, Russian Center, California Historical Society, Sonoma County Historical Society, Gualala Art Center, Gualala Quilting Guild, Rancho Bodega Historical Society, and Presidio Historical Association. We have over 30 individuals, churches, and universities working on various tasks for the Fort Ross 2012 programs and projects.
Our logo was created by Drew Fagan. Many others are participating in various ways. We want to take this opportunity to recognize the work of Vana Lawson, Kashaya elder, who passed away in of 2011. She was creating movement among the Kashaya and efforts at Fort Ross to educate people and to share the Kashaya world.
I want to take this opportunity to share with you the deep honor I have in Co- Chairing the Fort Ross 2012 Bicentennial. Having looked forward to 2012 for over twenty years we are finally here! It has become clear to me that for many it is a very special occasion to commemorate this amazing history as so many share this love and passion of Fort Ross. It is really inspiring to witness. The people of Ross, who were so diverse, living in a raw and uncertain world, often remind me of who we are today. We face many challenges at Fort Ross but as they did long ago we will make our mark, that I am certain. The efforts and shared passion by many will make certain of our success. Thank you.

Dan has a B.A. University of Massachusetts, Amherst, 1969 in Business Management and Economics, emphasis in Soviet-United States Agricultural Economics and M.A. San Francisco State University, Museum Studies (emphasis in archaeological analysis and curation), 2004.
